The Sydney Theatre officially opened in January 2004 and is one of the latest purpose-built theatre venues in Sydney. Adding to the line of theatres located along Hickson Rd in Walsh Bay. The Sydney Theatre Company comprises of 3 venues within the area, these include The Sydney Theatre, Wharf 1 and Wharf 2.

The Sydney Theatre is a specialist drama and dance theatre, seating over 850 people. The second largest of its size within the Syndey area, second to Sydney Opera House. The Sydney Theatre provides a venue not only for Sydney Theatre Company productions but also for Walsh Bay residents Sydney Dance Company and Bangarra Dance Theatre. It could also house touring productions from similarly-sized venues interstate as well as productions from overseas.
